Tomas Delgado, a third generation guitar builder and a really great guy, is making excellent classical and flamenco guitars. He has a great selection and truly fair prices .I'm having him make a guitar for me in the next year. Visit www.candelas.com the number phone is 323.261.2011 He also does repair and restoration. When you at the Candelas shop, be sure to check out the painting done by Pepe Romero (when he was15) and the letter from Andres Segovia praising his familys guitars.

My Classical Guitar lessons are taught in a way that the students learn through positive reinforcement. I believe having a lesson free of fear is essential for learning. This makes the guitar the joy it's intended to be. I also believe that teachers need to remove their ego from the process and ask how they can serve the student.
Without a beautiful sound you will ultimately grow dissatisfied with your guitar playing and the love will fade. A poor sound loses the singing beauty of the guitar. No matter how fast you learn to play you will never achieve the satisfaction you get from a wonderfully resonant tone that is what leaves audiences entranced. It’s interesting to me that when my dear friend Pepe Romero picks up a new Classical Guitar for the first time, he plays slow lyrical passages from Gaspar Sanz or Rodrigo. He’s about the fastest guitarist in the world .Pepe can play at blazing speeds first thing in the morning but he listens for the potential beauty in a guitar first. To learn this a Classical Guitarist must learn where and how to set a string in motion and do it the same way every time.My students and I review the master works of teaching from 26 sources to solidify the conepts of correct movement. The idea is to show students which techniques are done consistently in sound production ,string crossing, rest stroke/ free stroke, thumb rotation and a number of critical elements to playing with the right hand. We work on left hand ease with the same common ground technique from the master classical guitarists like Sor ,Aguado , Tarrega etc. All this is done in a way that's free of dogma/ ego with a encouraging spirit in my lessons. When the elements are put together the growth of your expresion with the Classical Guitar is amazing.
OK nice philosophy. You may be thinking, Can I really play, not just record and edit or play a piece into a video camera for 3 days and pick the best take.
Well here's a link to a 1996 concert just raw concert footage. While you are there check out the music video from La Catedral. http://youtube.com/watch?v=do0MsFVmEIU

Classical Guitar technique by Duncan, Thumb postion and movement from the wrist with a flexing motion the same as holding a coin between the thumb and index finger ( *great classcal guitar technique hint) The concept that most students cannot become great classical guitarists is fortified by the people who don't really know how to actually teach " Classical Guitar technique" and by people who are not great classical guitarists themselves. They often think great playing is all about "natural ability". Natural ability backfires when the music gets really tricky because ALL of the great classical guitarists Work and work smart at the top of the repertoire. If a guitarist relies on natural dexterity alone he will hit the window and it will shatter. The trick is to make classical guitar technique a fun daily routine that enhances your playing. Some of the pieces I teach to advanced Classical Guitarists include, Concerto de Aranjuez (Pepes' fingerings), Barrios, Albeniz and Tarrega. And yes, I love to teach beginners. Beginning students learn rapidly and join the guitar playing family for life. It’s so fun to see them learn and share their excitement.
(Click on phototo the left, for the best classical guitars available /guitar salon located in Los Angeles) The Photo to the left is the great Classical Guitar legend, Francisco Tarrega.(Tarrega technique) His Left Hand advice on classical guitar technique cuts 10 years off misguided effort and saves so much stress. Notice his Parallel knuckles, his use of weight transfer in the left hand tip joint solves bar fatigue and that silly left hand thumb cramp from needless clamping.

Many thanks to all of the amazing classical guitarists in the Los Angeles area and my wonderful friends Pepe and Celin Romero for their kind inspiration in my life. There are many wonderful Classical guitar teachers out there and many wonderful students. I believe that love grows by encouraging the spirit and that's the way I teach the classical guitar. I also want to say that playing the classical guitar is a well formed craft and that I am committed to teaching the techniques handed down from the masters in clear efficient detail. There is often a ( light bulb) changing moment for my advanced students who have struggled with things that are solved by very minor changes. |

| Click on photo (Above) for more articles on the classical guitar and Classical guitar Maestro Andres Segovia (Click on photo for link about Maestro Carlevaro) Below is a page from master Classical guitar (technique) teacher Abel Carlevaro. His movement of the left hand saves so many problems. Moving with the tip of the left thumb following the second finger places the fingers in the exact same playing position every time! Remember every time you change the way you touch the string on either hand you make playing harder for yourself. This is much easier with a great teacher helping you! |
